Privacy policy
- You can use TravelHood without an account. Without one, everything stays on your phone.
- If you sign in with Google, we store your plans, saved places and phrases so they sync between your phones.
- Your location is used to show what's around you. We don't keep a history of where you've been.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use tracking or analytics tools.
- You can delete your account and its data at any time, in the app or on this site.
Who we are
TravelHood ("we", "us") makes the TravelHood travel app. Questions about this policy or your data go to support@gettravelhood.com.
What we collect and why
If you sign in
Signing in is optional and uses your Google account through Google Firebase Authentication. When you sign in we receive:
- Your name, email address and profile photo from Google, to show who's signed in and to identify your account.
- A Google account ID, used as the key for your account.
While you're signed in we store, in Google Cloud Firestore:
- Your plans: places, events and bookings you've added to Trip, with their dates, times and time zones.
- Your saved places and the details needed to show them (name, address, location, hours).
- Your phrases: phrases you've written in My phrases and phrases you've starred.
We use this only to sync your data between your phones and to restore it when you sign in again.
Location
With your permission, TravelHood uses your phone's location while the app is open to center the map and show nearby places, events, hours and directions. The app does not use your location in the background. We don't store your location on our servers or keep a history of where you've been. To find what's nearby, the app sends the coordinates of the area you're viewing to the services listed below. When you plan a trip somewhere else, it sends that area instead of your own location.
Kept only on your phone
Dark mode, your recent searches, downloaded phrase packs and translation languages, places cached for faster loading, and (if you don't sign in) your plans, saved places and phrases. These never leave your phone unless you sign in, and then only the synced items listed above do. Uninstalling the app or clearing its storage deletes them.
Translation and read-aloud
Translation runs on your phone with Google ML Kit. The language models download from Google once, and the text you translate isn't sent anywhere. Read-aloud (the Play buttons) uses your phone's own text-to-speech.
Ask, the AI guide
When Ask is available, the question you type, the area you're in or planning, and the local time are sent to our server and to Anthropic's Claude to write an answer. We don't use your questions for advertising, and we don't sell them.
Services the app connects to
TravelHood shows live information by asking these services directly. Like any website or app, they can see your phone's IP address and the request, and their own privacy policies apply.
| Service | What it's for | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Authentication and Firestore) | Sign-in and syncing | Your Google sign-in and the synced data above |
| OpenFreeMap | Map images | The map area you're viewing |
| OpenStreetMap servers (Overpass API and its public mirrors) | Nearby places and opening hours | The area you're viewing |
| Photon by Komoot | City and place search, naming a spot on the map | What you type into search, or the coordinates of a spot |
| OSRM (routing.openstreetmap.de) | Walking and driving directions | The start and end points of the route |
| Ticketmaster | Live events | The area you're viewing and the date range you chose |
| Viator (Tripadvisor) | Tours and activities | The destination and dates you look at. Bookings are made on Viator under Viator's terms and privacy policy. |
| Wikimedia (Wikidata and Commons) | Photos of places | Which place's photo to show |
| Google (ML Kit and Fonts) | Translation models and the app's fonts | Download requests only |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Ask, when available | Your question and the area you're in or planning |
If you tap a link to Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or a ticket seller, that app or site opens and its own privacy policy applies.
What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent your personal information.
- We don't show ads or share your data with advertisers.
- We don't use analytics, ad IDs or third-party tracking tools.
How long we keep it
Your account data is kept until you delete your account. Deleting it in the app removes your account and synced data from our database right away. If you ask by email, we delete it within 30 days and confirm by email.
Your choices and rights
- Location: turn it off at any time in your phone's settings. You can still search and plan trips.
- Account: sign out at any time (your data stays on the phone), or delete the account and its data. See Delete your account.
- Access or correction: email us for a copy of the data stored with your account, or to fix it.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California), you may have more rights over your data, such as objecting to how it's used or complaining to a data protection authority. Email us and we'll help.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). In our database, each account can read and change only its own data.
Children
TravelHood isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them. If you think a child has created an account, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use data you've already given us, we'll tell you in the app first.
